Salmon fishing in the Columbia River is looking very good this upcoming season. The season got off to a good start with plenty of catches in the early weeks, and it should only get better now that spring has arrived.
Oregon and Washington fish managers are expecting a large run of spring chinook salmon to the Columbia River and its tributaries in 2024. Managers are predicting a good run of hatchery and wild salmon to return to the Columbia River. It sure has me excited!
Last year, the spring salmon run actually came in at 274,495.
If predictions are correct, this will be the biggest return of spring salmon entering the Columbia River since 2015. I’m excited. This could mean excellent Columbia River salmon fishing.
In my opinion, spring salmon is by far the best eating fish the Columbia River has to offer. Spring salmon average 10 to 20 pounds.
My season for spring salmon fishing trips started in the middle of March.
I offer spring salmon fishing in the Portland, Oregon, area. We will be fishing around the Portland airport to start the season.
In the middle of April, I turn my attention to the lower Willamette River for spring salmon.
I will continue to salmon fish on the Willamette River through June.
