Should the Columbia River be closed to salmon fishing, or even if the activity diminishes, the lower Willamette River near Portland remains a prime spot for catching some of the most flavorful fish. The Willamette River also offers superb spring salmon fishing.

Spring Chinook salmon are one of the most popular species of salmon in the Columbia River and Willamette River systems. They are known for their beautiful coloring, which varies from a dark, almost black, back to a silvery belly. When you catch a spring chinook salmon, it’s easy to see why it’s so popular. Most spring chinook salmon weigh between 10 and 25 pounds, no matter if you catch them in the Columbia River or the Willamette River.

Columbia River guided fall salmon fishing trips.

During the autumn season, the Columbia River becomes a prime spot for fishing enthusiasts to catch two varieties of salmon: the large coho salmon, also referred to as silvers, and the chinook salmon, known as fall kings. The Columbia River’s chinook run boasts numerous fish weighing between 20 to 30 pounds, and occasionally even larger. Coho salmon, on the other hand, are generally smaller, with weights ranging from 5 to 15 pounds. Both species return in vast numbers, often in the hundreds of thousands, and particularly bountiful years have recently brought over a million salmon to the river.
